Fibreglass Bellyboard

Made this fibreglass bellyboard for Warwick recently which ended up being an interesting project. I grew up surfing at Valla with Warwick and its good to see him still out there. We decided to make the board longer than a regular bodyboard for ease of paddling and catching waves, added wooden keels for a little more direction and control (Warwick doesn't like wearing swim fins) and kept the rocker low with with an edge around the bottom rail to keep the board fast. We also decided to cut a crescent in the tail and scoop out the deck a little so it fitted his body better.

Double Flyer Volta for Mitch

Finished off this 5'6" Double Flyer Volta for Mitch before Christmas. It's based off a similar board I made for my brother about 12 months ago which he really enjoys riding when he wants a break from his shortboards.

Unfortunately Mitch broke his leg surfing recently and can't surf for a while. Hope you heal quick bro and are back in the water soon.

This fine representation of wave sliding is performed by a man that more often than not is found on the other side of the camera... That's right, its Mr Oldfield. I spent the last day of 2011 hanging out with Nat and his beautiful family, just chillin and surfing our brains. I had the pleasure of experiencing the glide, trim and finesse of this mighty board. You really just have to point, shoot and enjoy the glide. What a family, what a board and what a day! Yew.

New Volta for Kallen

I made this 5'10" Volta for Kallen a little before xmas but haven't had a chance to blog much as I've been under the pump finishing off my other xmas board orders.

I saw Kallen out in the surf the other day getting some nice rides and he told me he's been having fun getting used to the fish. I trust there's plenty more nice rides for him in store.

This is Jaya a frothing little grommie from Valla Beach. His very first board was a Sage Joske 5 foot nothing twin keel fish. Since then his quiver selection has broadened to whatever he can get his massive feet on. Lars is from Germany and he happened to pop into the Valla factory on his way up the East Coast to check out some boards in our showroom. He was lucky enough to time a great run of swell and favourable sand banks, and ended up living out of his camper van in the car park at the beach for quite a few weeks. It was the best surf we've had in quite a while. After some deliberation and after measuring up the length of his van he decided to order this 7'4" Mini-Log. The idea was to create a board which rode like a log but could fit in the back of his car.

I was fortunate enough to head down the South Coast earlier this year with Andrew Kidman and Simon Anderson and meet up with locals Mick Mackie and Garth Dickenson. This board was based off one of Simon's earliest Thrusters - the board he won the Coke contest on. It was really cool to go surfing with Simon and I was really impressed with his surfing. I was a little nervous when he was checking out my board but he was very gracious with his words and gave me a few tips to boot.

Did a run up the coast the weekend before last to attend the Byron Bay Surf Festival. It was great to get out of the factory and set up the boards on Sunday on the beach at Wategoes for display. Was really pleasant to watch the little runners trickling through and talk surfboards to the passer-bys.

Living in the Bay I tend to get stuck on my log heaps as the point are just too irresistible. However now that I'm down the coast for a couple of months I'm super excited to take advantage of the epic uncrowded beachies and get my fish on.

I'm currently on a WQS stint that is taking me to California, Brazil and Portugal. After the California contest I had a 2 week break before brazil and Shaun Cansdell and I jumped at the opportunity to get back down to Chile. There were no contests, no photographers or videographers, just us and an abundance of lefthanders. I think Shaun was in goofy heaven. The waves have been pretty incredible the last few weeks here and I've been hearing about waves all up and down the coast. It feels like every morning I get up and there's still swell. We usually don't get that many good waves over head high, but lately I've seen some normally very friendly beachbreaks turn into slab-like barrels.

The shot below was taken by my friend Paul Joseph and was right out front of a place I surf every other day... it doesn't normally look like this. There was a lot of water moving and I was struggling to get into position and get down the face on my 5'7" Twin Keel Verve. The first wave I did cartwheels down the face and the next freight-trained off in front of me.

Its a pleasant change to surf some waves over head high and get bullied around again. Hope if you're reading this you're getting some waves too.

I spent the morning down the beach with Sage, the waves were pretty good. I got this little snap of Sage along with a stack of pretty good video footage which I might put into a little clip one day. Sage was surfing his 5'7 twin keel verve. It's his board of choice when the waves have some power, it sure was working for him out there today.

2 weeks after I acquired my provisional licence I drove myself down to the town of Newcastle on a Thursday afternoon. I like Newcastle; it’s like the northern beaches. Just ghetto. A lot less BMW’s and Range Rovers driving around. I was there to meet Nicholas Damen. The aim to shoot another edit in his ‘One Day, One Slay’ series.

The swell was south and the winds were strong. Not the ideal weather for Newcastle for surfing let alone logging. That Thursday night as we sat in ‘Grill’d’ eating lamb hamburgers we made the decision to head south.

We had a tip to head to the Coal Coast. We departed Newcastle at 4 am and didn’t arrive back till 7 that night. This edit you see here is what we discovered. Proves those quick day trips are worth your time.

Did a run up to the Pass recently to hang out with DH, Taylor, Cyrus, Richard and Leo. Waves weren't great but we had fun.

This is part of my current quiver and includes from left to right: 9'6" Vibe Log, 9'6" Log, 8'6" Kiko'o, 6'6" Alaia, 8'9" Alaia, 6'0" Vector, 7'0" Single Fin, 5'10" Quad Shorty, 5'7" Twin Keel Fish, 5'7" Styrofoam/Epoxy Quad Verve, 5'7" Styrofoam/Epoxy Quad Volta, 5'7" Twin Keel Vibe. My father made the Single Fin and the 8'9" Alaia and the rest are my own creations.

Quiver shot is by Cyrus Sutton. It was nice to hang out with Cyrus and watch his new movie 'Stoked and Broke'. Not only is Cyrus a talented filmmaker but he also surfs really well too.

Nathan's in the process of collecting footage for another film which I'm sure will be heartfelt like his previous ones. He's also a schoolteacher and a devoted family man. So it's nice to see Nathan finding some spaces in his busy life to get out in the surf and enjoy it.

Hung out with Morgan Maasen and Cyrus Sutton a few weekends back - there weren't a lot of waves around but we had a good time. Morgan snapped this pic of dad when he rocked up at the factory about 3 pm in the arvo after surfing all morning.

I like this shot. Dad has that happy but tired look you get when you've had a long surf; and his unkept grey/white hair looks fluffy and makes him look a bit like an angel with a glow around his head.

A couple of pics I took randomly around the factory recently

The above aboard is glassed with two layers of 7.5 ounce Volan top and bottom. It has dual red cedar stringers sandwiching a green foam insert. I was pretty disappointed after I glassed this board as it was originally meant as stock board and the volan looked 'patchy' after I laminated it. Apparently this can be caused if the glass gets moisture in it. I ended up acquiring this board into my quiver and am really enjoying riding it... had some fun surfs at the Pass and Valla on it recently.

Dual stringered Vice Log, another one for Japan. This board has been a lot of work. It has a navy tint front and white pigment in the back third; with navy splashes in the white & white splashes in the Navy. The bottom lap didn't come out quite as clean as I would have liked, so I ended up putting 3 pinlines around the bottom lap. The pic with the green tape shows me working out how to set up the pinlines. I was really happy with the outcome.

These are a couple of pics of my brother Heath and I sharing some waves at Valla.

Heath is currently in WA chasing the WQS contests. In fact he's away most of the year. As a competitor you have to stay closely dialled in to your equipment. Fractional changes in design can make big differences - which means your surfboards are all relatively similar.

When he's home Heath seems to want to wind down, chill out and surf some different equipment. I made him a log last year he pulls out when its get smaller. And he likes to pull out the old 'Tracker' from underneath the house on occasion.

I recently had Sage make me a 9'6 "Vice" log as I was after something that would be super easy to nose ride in a mmajority of conditions. This vice is a little different as the rails, nose and tail have all been slightly modified.

The board is epic. It's a deep marone tint with a rather large white circle on the bottom. It's super easy to ride as it paddles like a dream and trims across a wave effortlessly. My initial thoughts were to ride this beauty with a 10" hatchet even though I have been riding Greenough style fins in most of my recent logs. The hatchet went well as it allowed nice transitions and drew sweet lines. Although every time I went to nose ride through a critical section the tail kept letting go and has been driving me crazy.

This morning I was logging at this fun little beachie just near the "Big Banana" when I realised that my beautiful marone hatchet that I paid good moolah for was about to sink into "Davey Jones' locker". I went in and decided to use this opportunity to try out the 10" Greenough just to see if it made any difference to this little tail sliding problem that I've been having. I paddled out and waited a few seconds and then stroked my way in to this little sucky right hander. I approached the section from behind and optimistically ran towards the beak. I instantly felt a feeling that I hadn't felt on this board yet as it locked in and lifted through the section. I was pumped it didn't skip out. I'd already surfed for about 2hrs prior to the fin swap but after that wave I knew it was going to be awhile before I went in. The sweet spot had been found.

I surfed for about another hour before the hunger pains kicked in and got over a dozen sweet moments of tip time. I was stoked, problem solved. Who knew that a simple fin swap could deliver such subtle variations to the performance of a board.

Over the next week the Valla Blog may not get a lot of attention, that's because team Valla is off up the coast to beautiful Noosa Heads for the annual Festival of surfing. Sage and Jack have both won divisions there in the past but have chosen not to compete this year and instead just chill an shred. This morning I was hunting down a few fun little sliders in the corner at Tallows but I wasn't the only one doing some hunting as I had a strange shadow just like this one swim under my board several times super creepy. The ocean was truly alive, there was a massive bait ball being hammered by all types of marine life just south of the cape. I guess thats what this guy was after.

I have had the pleasure over the last week to surf with and watch Derek slip and slide his finless boards through the line up at the pass. Its unbelievable how much control he has dodging and weaving through the crowd whilst doing numerous 360's. He's truly amazing to watch. Image from Liquid salt magazine.

Black Knight

This is the second clip for the Waves Black Knight free surfing awards that Harry Triglone has used his magic to make my surfing look half decent. Growing up all I wanted was to do the biggest most radical turns I could do and the thought of not moving and simply just trimming across a wave bored the absolute shit out of me. Now days it's probably one of my favourite surf time's. I love the free feeling that you get from a 8'9 Alaia, no fins, no drag just trim. The speed is like no other I reckon it the fastest I have ever been on a wave in a straight line.

A little while ago now Sage gave me this Vector to try out. It was the one that was in Ho'okupu in Byron Bay. It's epic, I love the feeling of the crazy lines this board allows you to draw. It's probably the most fun I've ever had on a wave going in a straight line... with the odd 360.

This is a little clip filmed by Dad when we were in Hawaii for the Triple Crown events in 2010.
