Ocean : Valla by Mark Tipple
Ocean : Valla from Mark Tipple on Vimeo.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mark on a trip to NZ a couple of years back. I was impressed with his quiet and thoughtful demeanor and his professionalism and commitment to what he was doing. On this trip he spent innumerous hours with his water camera in freezing and often unruly conditions.
Not so recently Mark spent a week hanging out at the factory, taking pictures and filming. I wasn't sure what Mark had in mind but was confident in what he would come up with (see the video above); and it was nice to get a chance to hang out again.
Since April I've had to make some sharp choices that has sent certain parts of my life spinning in different directions - the last 3 months I've been working on a mine site in Qld a long way from the coast. So watching this video is a bitter-sweet experience, reminding me of things lost and fond memories.

Shot JBay
Here's a few waves surfing life threw together of the jbay billabong pro that just finished. I was lucky to get a few heats in pumping jbay with just a couple of guys out
and have so much fun it's ridiculous. I absolutely love the place!

The PJ Special
A rad little short by Harry Triglone, featuring Heath riding a 5'8" singlefin shaped by Sage, modelled after a couple of boards Paul was making in the late seventies.

One Fin is Fun!
Sage created these beautiful single fins for me a few weeks ago. The pink and orange rig is a 5'8" based off a 6'0" round nose, round tail that Dad shaped and surfed in the very early '80s, I think... The burnt orange babe is a 6'8" rhino chaser straight from the Middle Valla green room in the early '70s. I'm yet to ride the 6'8" babe as the surf has been exceptionally lazy the last few weeks but I've had heaps of joy on the 5'8" rig. I'm loving the different lines you can draw with single fins, especially flying high-line soul arches through speedy sections and longer drawn out lines. So fun...

Foam symmetry.
It's been a long time since I've made a post. There's no excuses. This summer I hardly had the time to enjoy the salt and sand. You know work commitments, getting married and I don't think that huey put on much of a show anyway.
I just relocated back to Suffolk and have found my spark again. My quivers looking amazing, I have a few epic fishes (Quad and Twin keel), a Thruster which I'm really enjoying, a couple of finless boards, Hand Planes, a surf Matt and of course my trusty log's and old mals.
It's really nice to be back in the water, hopefully I can get a few nice pic posted up here soon. Oh yeah and if you haven't got your self a copy of the latest Foam Symmetry get on down to your local news agency and pick yourself up a copy as Sage, Jack and I all featured in it. yew cheers.

Mid Way Through
A couple of pics of a 6'0" I made Jack recently - taken midway through the shaping process. I took the template from a 7'4" Shane Plastic Machine then modified it to 6'0". The yellow strip down the middle is coloured foam sandwiched between 1/8th"red cedar stringers. There's a pic of the finished board a few posts back.

Dan's Thruster
These are a couple of pics of Dan and a board I finished for him just after xmas. Being a bigger guy I wanted to make sure there was a lot of volume so he could catch heaps of waves and paddle around easily. The dimensions came out at 6'6" x 21 1/2" x 3". Although there's a lot of board there its basically a blown up version of some of the high performance boards my brother Heath rides. With a low entry rocker, bump wing at the front fins and single concave running into Vee with concave panels out the tail, all the ingredients are still there for the board to perform well .
Hope you're getting a chance to get in the ocean Dan and getting heaps of fun rides.

Fibreglass Bellyboard
Made this fibreglass bellyboard for Warwick recently which ended up being an interesting project. I grew up surfing at Valla with Warwick and its good to see him still out there. We decided to make the board longer than a regular bodyboard for ease of paddling and catching waves, added wooden keels for a little more direction and control (Warwick doesn't like wearing swim fins) and kept the rocker low with with an edge around the bottom rail to keep the board fast. We also decided to cut a crescent in the tail and scoop out the deck a little so it fitted his body better.

Double Flyer Volta for Mitch
Finished off this 5'6" Double Flyer Volta for Mitch before Christmas. It's based off a similar board I made for my brother about 12 months ago which he really enjoys riding when he wants a break from his shortboards.
Unfortunately Mitch broke his leg surfing recently and can't surf for a while. Hope you heal quick bro and are back in the water soon.

Paul Joske 12 footer.
This fine representation of wave sliding is performed by a man that more often than not is found on the other side of the camera... That's right, its Mr Oldfield. I spent the last day of 2011 hanging out with Nat and his beautiful family, just chillin and surfing our brains. I had the pleasure of experiencing the glide, trim and finesse of this mighty board. You really just have to point, shoot and enjoy the glide. What a family, what a board and what a day! Yew.
